文化适应反映文化特性和文化功能的基本概念。主要指文化对于环境的适应，有时也指文化的各个部分的相互适应。文化是人类社会特有的现象，是人类为了满足自身的需求而创造出来的物质和非物质产品的总和。美国文化人类学家L.A.怀特认为，文化是特定的动物有机体用来调适自身与外界环境的明确而具体的机制。文化对于环境的适应主要表现为工具和技术适应、组织适应、思想观念适应这3个方面。人类为了生存，需要通过劳动去占有自然。在人类的早期，自然条件的状况决定了人类劳动所采用的工具和技术水平。用斧子砍树,用渔网捕鱼，用弓箭狩猎,斧子、渔网和弓箭等文化元素，都是人类为了满足生存的需要而适应自然环境创造出来的。人类为了生产和生活，需要制定历法，确定年、月、日、时和节气，这些也是根据地球运行的规律创造出来的。时空观念以及在此基础上发展起来的天文学、数学、几何学、物理学等，也是以自然环境为依据的。作为文化基本要素的社会组织是适应社会需要而产生的。初民社会，人类为了安全和觅食的需要结群生活，出现了原始群、部落和氏族组织。私有制产生以后，又出现了国家等社会组织。随着社会分工的发展和人类需求的增长，人类不得不更有效地组织起来以满足各方面的需要。自近代以来，各种为数众多的巨大的社会组织──包括政治的、军事的、经济的、文化的、宗教的、科学的、教育的、娱乐的等社会组织纷纷建立起来。每一种社会组织都是为了一个特定的目的而建立，并围绕这个目的而运行。例如，中国在20世纪60年代末期设立了地震局，80年代成立了老龄委员会，改革以后出现了许多工业和贸易公司等，无不是为了适应环境变迁的需要而作出的组织调适。思想观念的适应性尤为明显。思想观念是物质生活条件的反映，它又反作用于物质生活条件。资本主义精神只有在社会生产力发展到能够使劳动产品变成商品的时候才会产生。当资本主义制度已经确立并暴露出种种弊端时，人类为了从这种困境中解脱出来，才有可能产生出种种社会主义思想。一般来说，虽然环境变化在先，思想反映于后，但思想对于环境的适应是最敏感的。文化适应与文化进化是两个相近而又不同的概念。从长远趋势看，文化适应与文化进化是一致的，但从每个具体时期和具体地区看，两者并非完全相同。文化进化反映着人类社会由同质状态向异质状态、由简单到复杂、由低级阶段向高级阶段的发展，文化适应反映着环境的变迁，要求文化作相应的调整，这种调整可能是进步的,也可能是退步的。但从人类历史发展的长河看,文化对倒退的适应只是暂时的，总的趋势则是进步的。
