卧龙自然保护区位于北纬 30°45＇～31°25＇，东经102°52＇～103 °24＇，中国四川省阿坝藏族自治州汶县境内。东西长52公里，南北宽62公里，面积20万公顷，以自然生态系统和大熊猫等珍稀动物为主要保护对象。保护区处于四川盆地向青藏高原过渡的高山峡谷带的邛崃山脉东坡,最低海拔1200米,最高海拔6250米。主要河流有皮条河、正河、西河等，属岷江水系。沿河为深度切割的陡峻山坡，多悬崖峭壁，一般坡度30°左右，部分达60°以上。母岩由花岗岩、千枚岩、砂岩、白云岩、玄武岩组成。土壤随海拔由低向高呈山地黄壤、山地黄棕壤、山地棕壤、山地暗棕壤、山地棕色暗针叶林土、亚高山草甸土、高山草甸土及高山寒漠土等垂直带谱。气候温凉,多雨湿润,年平均气温8.9℃,年降水量931毫米,属中亚热带山地气候。植被也呈明显垂直带谱,基带(海拔1600米以下)为中亚热带常绿阔叶林带，1600～2000米为山地暖温带常绿和落叶阔叶林带，2000～2600米为山地寒温带针叶和阔叶混交林带，2600～3600米为亚高山亚寒带暗针叶林带，3600～4400（4800）米为高山寒带灌丛草甸带，4800米以上为永雪带，是世界上少见的较完整的山地垂直带谱。主要建群树种有岷江冷杉(Abies faxoniana)、鳞皮冷杉(A.squamata)、麦吊云杉（Picea brachytyla)、川西云杉(P.balfourniana)、云杉、铁杉(Tsuga chinensis)、红杉(Larix potaninii)、等针叶树，代表性的珍贵阔叶树种有连香树 (Cercidiphyllum japonicum)、珙桐 (Davidia involucrata)、领春木（Eupteleapleiosperma）等,亚高山、高山灌丛常由川滇高山栎 (Quercus aquifolioides)等栎类和多种杜鹃花和柳树组成。由箭竹(Sinarundinarianitida)成下木层的针叶阔叶混交林和针叶林是大熊猫 (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)生活栖息的生境。林下的箭竹、筱竹 (Thamnocalamus cuspidatus)是大熊猫的主要食物。其他珍稀动物还有金丝猴(Rhinoopithecus roxellanae)、 云豹(Neofelis nebulosa)、 羚羊 (Budorcas taxicolor)、白唇鹿(Cervus albirostris)、水鹿 (C.unicolor) 、灵猫、小熊猫(Ailurus fulgens)等。卧龙自然保护区建于1962年，1979年加入世界生物圈自然保护区协作网，世界野生生物基金会与中国合作建有大熊猫研究中心，开展大熊猫生态学研究。
