小溪自然保护区小溪自然保护区1982年建立，2001年6月批准为国家级自然保护区，面积为7220公顷。主要保护山地常绿阔叶林生态系统。一、地理位置保护区位于湖南省西部永顺县境内，地处武陵山西端。二、自然环境保护区为深切割的中山山地，区内山峦起伏，走向复杂。地层以变质岩为主。气候年均温11～12℃，无霜期较低处为250天，800米以上为200天；年降水量1300～1400毫米，湿度大、云雾多。成土母质为砂页岩，土壤肥力高，适宜林木生长。鱼泉溪、小岔溪贯穿全区，汇合后流入酉水可。三、植物资源保护区植物有1500多种。其中木本植物有419种。区内交通闭塞，原生低山阔叶林保护较好，这在中亚热带是难得的。常绿阔叶林多分布在海拔400～800米，沟谷以钩栗、宜昌润楠、猴欢喜、仿栗等为主，山坡上以甜槠、石栎、南岭栲、银木荷、枫香为主。林内藤本植物较多，大树上有粗藤缠绕，为多层次、多树种混交林。林相整齐。地势平缓处以马尾松、杉木为第一林层的针阔叶混交林，其中合围大的古杉木不少。植物组成除以樟科、山茶科、壳斗科、木兰科为主的常绿树外，还有许多漆树科、槭树科、椴树科、杨柳科、榆科、杜仲科、连香树科、茜草科、珙桐科、胡桃科和桦木科的落叶树种。国家保护的珍稀濒危植物有18种，一级有珙桐；二级有巴东木莲、银杏、水青树、伯乐树、连香树、香果树、杜仲、鹅掌楸；三级有楠木、闽楠、黄杉、银鹊树、领春木、白辛树、华榛长苞铁杉等。区内有纤维植物150多种，油料植物120多种，干果类100种，香料植物100余种。长苞杉多分布在海拔900米以上的陡坡悬崖之上，顶风傲雪，极耐干旱贫瘠。银鹊树多分布在海拔800米以下的山坡沟谷中，冠幅小，呈块状分布。竹坪村有一棵大银杏，树高30米，胸径1.4米。区内楠木种类特别多，有闽楠、湘楠、紫楠、白楠、润楠等16种，故有“楠木之乡”的美称。猴欢喜：杜英科。常绿乔木，高达12米。叶聚生小枝上部，花绿白色，数朵生于小枝顶端或小枝上部叶腋。蒴果木质，卵球形，密生刺毛，裂成五或六瓣。种子有黄色假种皮。木材供板料、器具等用材。四、动物资源保护区有国家重点保护动物，一级有黑麝；二级有林麝、虎纹蛙等。保护区已划分为核心区和外围区，核心区3333公顷。
