光化学光源用于光化学作业的光源。它必须具有以下特点:在需要的光谱波段具有高强度、长寿命、光强输出稳定、易点燃、便于安装的合理尺寸。目前应用的是一种封闭式的气体放电灯，在石英（或玻璃）管内充以适量的气体（或蒸气），利用两端电极的热电子发射维持放电，产生弧光。随所充气体的成分和压力、供电电流、灯管的直径不同，产生不同波长的辐射，并影响发光的强度和辐射能量的光谱分布。汞弧光灯是广泛应用的一种光源，该灯内充有适量的汞蒸气和氩气。汞对玻璃(或石英)管壁和电极材料均无腐蚀作用。按气压设计，汞灯分为高压、中压和低压弧，它们在紫外和可见光谱区均有富聚的能量分布。中压汞灯,除全谱被连续的背景辐射覆盖外,主要的线谱位于253.7、313.0、365.0、404.7、435.8、546.1和578.0纳米。当压力增加时,线谱增宽,连续背景辐射增强。但是，253.7纳米线，由于被其他汞原子再吸收的缘故,强度反而减弱。工业光化学反应中应用的汞弧灯的管内压力为2～110大气压，灯在较低压工作时可以用气流冷却，高压灯则必须采用水冷。通常的市售高压汞灯用直径较小的厚壁石英做灯管，外面再加一个玻璃套管，起隔热保温作用,并屏蔽有伤害性的短波辐射。还应提到,氙弧灯、脉冲氙灯、无极放电灯、激光光源以至太阳光，均为有助于光化学开发的光源。
