白光耀斑一种罕见的和剧烈的太阳活动现象。太阳耀斑一般通过白光是不能观测到的,只有通过Hα 线和电离钙的H、K线才能观测到。但有时在Hα 线所看到的亮区中的一些更小的区域，通过白光也能看到它的突然增高现象，持续时间大约几分钟，这就是白光耀斑。自1859年卡林顿发现太阳耀斑以来，迄今只观测到30多次白光耀斑。白光耀斑通常与大耀斑对应，大多数也是发射高能粒子流、远紫外射线、硬 X射线（有时还有γ射线）以及强射电爆发的质子耀斑或宇宙线耀斑。白光耀斑的发亮区往往有两块（也有一块或多块的，每块亮区大小约为1013米2量级），其位置与典型的双带耀斑中的双带重合，而且分别位于黑子区磁场中性线（见磁合并）的两边，但靠得很近，形状很像是跨越中性线的磁流管的根部。白光耀斑发生时间与耀斑的闪光相一致,也就和硬X射线、远紫外射线以及微波射电爆发的时间一致。白光亮块消失后，有时在双带耀斑的边缘部位也出现白光增亮。同时，这种白光边缘会以每秒40公里左右的速度运动，这种现象称为白光耀斑波。白光耀斑的发射机制尚未弄清。白光增亮与太阳脉冲式硬X射线爆发、 太阳远紫外线爆发以及太阳射电爆发几乎同时发生，因此，一般认为白光发射可能是太阳的中层和高层大气（色球和日冕）的耀斑区中由粒子加速过程产生的高能粒子流造成的。很可能是能量在10～100 兆电子伏的粒子流贯穿到太阳低层大气（光球）并与光球的稠密气体碰撞而产生白光发射。
