妇女就业成年妇女的一项基本权利，参与社会生活的一种基本活动方式。指妇女进入劳动力市场谋得职业，获取劳动报酬，参加社会工作。最初进入劳动力市场的主要是家庭贫困的妇女。随着世界范围的工业化、城市化（见都市化）、现代化和科学技术的迅速发展，社会对妇女劳动力需求量的增加，妇女文化水平的提高，就业意识的增强，以及妇女自身处境的改变，包括生育率下降，生育期缩短和家庭电器化、家务劳动社会化等诸多因素的影响，20世纪妇女就业已是普遍的社会现象。80年代，全世界妇女就业人数占劳动力总数的 1/3强。大约占半数的就业妇女从事农业生产，其他主要集中在教育、卫生、纺织、商业、服务业等部门，并跻身于过去由男性独占的新兴工作领域。据预测，2000年前妇女就业人数将持续增长。妇女大规模进入劳动市场，对推动世界经济的发展产生了重要的影响，但在就业方面，她们仍处于不利地位。如妇女就业机会少，可供选择的职业有限，有些国家的法律甚至排除妇女参加某些职业等。妇女在接受职业培训、进修等方面，得不到与男子平等的机会，特别是得不到专业、技术和行政职业的培训和提高，很难晋升到负责岗位，尤其是最高一级的决策岗位。大多数妇女的工作仍局限在技术程度低、收入低的职业岗位。在大多数国家，妇女的平均收入比男子低40～60％。妇女就业问题已经引起全世界的广泛注意，多数国家持鼓励态度，并通过立法手段保障妇女在就业方面享有与男子平等的权利。中华人民共和国宪法规定，妇女在经济生活中享有同男子平等的权利，男女同工同酬。婚姻法规定，夫妻双方均有选择职业、参加工作和参加社会活动的自由。美国、法国、日本等国政府通过了男女就业机会均等、报酬均等的法律、法规，禁止性别歧视，要求社会给妇女在谋求职业、学习培训、晋级提升、社会福利、退休养老等方面与男子平等的权利。苏联政府对有小孩的妇女实行弹性工作制。挪威、加拿大、奥地利、瑞典等国政府通过职业培训，帮助妇女进入非传统职业。瑞典政府还向雇佣妇女从事非传统工作的厂商提供补贴。日本政府鼓励社会、工厂企业成立成人再教育职业学校，帮助因婚姻、生育等原因而中断工作的妇女重新就业。西欧许多国家的政府为解决失业问题，扶持妇女创办企业。约旦、伊拉克、埃及、突尼斯、也门、沙特阿拉伯等国也鼓励妇女工作，并制定了保障妇女就业的措施。（见表）
