教学方法为了完成一定的教学任务，师生在共同活动中采用的手段。既包括教师教的方法，也包括学生学的方法。教学方法是随着教学活动的出现而逐渐发展起来的。远在中国春秋末期和古希腊时期，就有运用讲解、问答、练习、复习等方法的记载。在长期的封建社会里，教学方法发展缓慢，主要采用讲授法。资本主义时期,由于科学技术和工商业的发展,资产阶级需要培养具有一定科学知识和技术的人才，学校增添了自然科学的课程，这就引起了教学方法的革新。一些进步教育家,致力于教学艺术和儿童心理的研究,积极推行了演示、观察、实验、参观等一系列的新方法，并改进了讲解、谈话等方法。随着现代科学技术的进步，人类知识的积累速度加快，为把越来越多的知识顺利传授给下一代，需要进一步改进传统的教学方法并创造新的教学方法。现代化教学手段的使用，以及生理学、心理学的新成就，为教学方法的发展提供了良好的条件。常用的教学方法有：讲授、谈话、讲读、观察、参观、演示、实验、实习、练习、阅读指导、欣赏、复习等。揭示同类教学方法的共同性和不同类别教学方法的不同特点、研究各种教学方法的相互配合，探索教学方法最佳效果的客观规律，是教学论的重要研究任务之一。教学方法的分类:有的按照教学工作任务来划分,如传授新知识的方法，形成技能、技巧的方法，巩固知识、技能的方法，检查知识、技能的方法等。有的按照获取知识的途径来划分,如口授法(讲授、谈话、讲读等),直观法(演示、观察、参观等)，实践法（实习、实验、练习等）。也有人主张按照指导学生掌握知识的程序和水平划分为：认知法（包括讲述、讲解、谈话、观察等使学生感知和获取知识的方法），复现法（包括练习、实验、实习、复习等使学生再现旧知识和教师指出活动程序的方法），探讨研究法（包括使学生在新的情景中获取和运用知识、进行创造性活动的各种方法）。教学方法运用的科学性和有效性在于：保证学生正确地领会和系统地掌握教材，而不会造成混乱和歪曲的印象；有利于培养学生的技能、技巧和运用知识于实践；有利于激发学生的学习欲望，使他们能生动活泼地、主动地学习，培养他们的创造精神。每堂课选择和采用哪些教学方法，一般是根据教学的目的和任务决定的，同时也要考虑课程的性质和具体教材的特点，学生的年龄特点和学校环境、设备条件等。几种教学方法合理地、恰当地结合使用，则更有利于取得良好的教学效果。
