Hello! Im Emma from mmmEnglish and in this lesson we e focusing on your pronunciation, specifically syllable stress, which is very important. Its the difference between the noun, present and the verb, present.

Hear the difference? These two words look exactly the same but they e pronounced differently.

And thats all because of syllable stress. First thing!

Whats a syllable? A syllable is a part of an English word and its created by a vowel sound.
什么是音节？音节是英语单词的一部分，是根据元音划定的。
Take the example from before. Present. It has two vowel sounds in it/e/and//.
拿之前的单词为例。/preznt/。它有两个元音，/e/和//。
Present. Thus, theres two syllables.
所以，这里有两个音节。book /bk/ 这个单词只有一个音节。
The word book has only one syllable. The word date has only one syllable.
date /det/ 也只有一个音节。你可能会有些困惑，因为这里有两个元音字母。
Its tricky because there are two vowel letters. … …

But if you listen carefully youll hear there is only one vowel sound/e/, date. The e is silent and in the word my, theres only one syllable.
e 在这个单词中是不发音的，而单词 /ma/，只有一个音节。尽管这个单词里只有辅音字母，还是有一个元音。
Even though theres only consonants in this word there is still a vowel sound. The y makes a vowel sound/a/, my.
y 发元音/a/，/ma/。单词 apple 有多少音节？/pl/。
How many syllables does the word apple have? Apple. Two.
两个。单词 banana 有多少音节？/bnɑn/。
How many syllables does the word banana have? Banana. Three.
三个。那么 beautiful 呢？/bjutfl/。
What about beautiful? Beautiful. Three.
三个。economical 呢？/iknmkl/。
And economical? Economical. Five.
五个。很好！
Great! Notice that Im saying ba-NA-na, not ba-na-na.
注意，我说的是ba-NA-na，而不是ba-na-na。音节不都是一样的！
Not all syllables are equal! If there is only one syllable in the word then of course, it will be the stressed syllable.
如果单词里只有一个音节，那么它当然是重读音节。如果单词里有一个以上音节的话，那么会有一个音节比其他音节语气强烈，清楚，醒目。
If there is more than one syllable in the word, then there will be one syllable that is stronger, clearer and bolder than the others. The pronunciation of that syllable is clearer.
重读音节的发音较为清楚。这是一些例子：/pfkt/。
Here are a few more examples: Perfect. Can you hear how the first syllable is clearer and stronger than the second?
你能听清第一个音节比第二个音节更清楚更强烈吗？第二个音节是/fkt/。
/p: /. /p: /. The second syllable is/fkt/.

Perfect. Perfect. So the first syllable is definitely stronger.

What a beautiful sunset. We use this stress to add emphasis to our sentences as well.

Enthusiastic. Enthusiastic. Its the fourth syllable.

So how do you know which syllable to stress? Unfortunately, there is no simple rule that you can follow but there is an easy way that you can find out this information!

When you e looking up a new word in the dictionary youll see the phonetic script next to that word. It will tell you what syllable to stress and it will be marked like this: Complicated. Economical. Intelligent.
它比其他音节更强烈。如果错读了它会造成困解。
Of course you can also listen to the pronunciation if you e using an online dictionary. Some longer words will also have a secondary stress but the strongest stress — the main stress — is this symbol.

So what do you need to remember? There is always one main syllable in a word that is stressed.

Its stronger than the others. Pronouncing it incorrectly can be confusing.
