过程哲学一种主张世界即是过程，要求以机体概念取代物质概念的唯心主义哲学学说。又称活动过程哲学或有机体哲学。过程哲学主要研讨 5个概念：变化、持续、永恒客体、机体、价值和混合。它涉及自然科学、社会科学、美学、伦理学和宗教学等领域，并由此构成对宇宙的总看法，因而它又被称为宇宙形而上学或哲学的宇宙论。过程哲学的创始人是英国数学家、逻辑学家A.N.怀特海，其后的主要代表是C.哈特肖恩。怀特海把宇宙的事物分为"事件"的世界和"永恒客体"的世界。事件世界中的一切都处于变化的过程之中，各种事件的综合统一体构成机体，从原子到星云、从社会到人都是处于不同等级的机体。机体有自己的个性、结构、自我创造能力，机体的根本特征是活动，活动表现为过程。过程就是机体各个因子之间有内在联系的、持续的创造活动，它表现一机体可以转化为另一机体，因而整个世界就表现为一种活动的过程。在过程的背后并不存在不变的物质实体，其唯一的持续性就是活动的结构。而这种结构是进化的，所以自然界是活生生的、有生机的。怀特海认为，自然和生命的分开是不能被理解的，只有两者的融合才构成真正的实在，亦即构成宇宙。所谓"永恒客体"，在怀特海那里只是作为抽象的可能性而存在，并非人们意识之外的客观实在，它能否转变为现实，要受到实际存在客体的限制，并最终受上帝的限制。他认为，事件世界正是上帝从许多处于潜在可能状态的世界中挑选出来的，因此上帝是现实世界的泉源，是具体实在的基础。哈特肖恩继承和发展了怀特海的观点，而且表现出更加浓厚的宗教唯心主义色彩。他强调"连续性"这个概念，认为万物都是有感觉的，有心灵的。一个机体的感觉由组成机体的各种细胞的感觉所组成，而细胞的感觉又由更简单的物理实体（原子、电子、质子等）的感觉所组成，于是从机体内的最低级的感觉逐渐走向高级的感觉，形成一个感觉的连续统，即感觉之流。哈特肖恩在这种泛心论的基础上，认为上帝是有意识的，是无所不知的，万物都包摄于上帝之中。20世纪60年代以来，过程哲学在美国有些影响，它与基督教有密切联系，同时又力图以系统论等新学科的成就来为过程哲学作论证。
