休谟，D.英国资产阶级哲学家、历史学家和经济学家。17生于苏格兰破落贵族家庭。早年在爱丁堡大学学习法律。1734年到法国从事哲学研究和著述。1737年回国。1752～1757年在爱丁堡任律师、图书馆馆长。1763年在驻法使馆任秘书。1765年任代理公使。1767～1768年任负责外交事务的副国务大臣。1769年退休。1776年因病逝世。在哲学上，他首倡近代不可知论，对感觉之外的任何存在持怀疑态度，对外部世界的客观规律性和因果必然性持否定态度。主要著作有《人性论》（3卷本,1737～1740）、《人类理解研究》等。在经济学方面，他是18世纪货币数量论的著名代表,是反对重商主义的。他关于国际贸易的学说对英国古典政治经济学有很大的影响。他的社会历史观点以人性论为基础，把对财富、享乐和权力的追求看作是人的本性,认为无论何时何地,人性是一致的和不变的；历史的作用就在于发现有关人性的普遍原理,提供经验教训。所著《自凯撒入侵至1688年革命的英国史》（6卷本，1754～1762）是一部政治史,但此书在附录和一些章节中对各历史时期的生活方式、道德风尚和精神文化作了分门别类的记述。他是把历史研究范围扩大到社会和文明方面的近代西方史学家之一。休谟的政治思想保守,反对英国资产阶级革命,同情查理一世，认为国会要求的权利缺乏历史根据，当时破坏法制的是议会而不是王朝政府。在书中，他还严厉抨击长期议会和O.克伦威尔；把受审和服刑时的国王描绘成"殉道者"；歌颂"光荣革命"，说它开辟了英国宪法的新纪元，使英国人得以享受人类前所未有的最完备的自由制度。
