主要的矛盾方面与非主要的矛盾方面表征矛盾双方在矛盾统一体中不同地位和作用的哲学范畴。主要的矛盾方面是指在矛盾统一体中居于支配地位的一方；非主要的矛盾方面则指居于被支配地位的一方。唯物辩证法认为，任何现实的矛盾，双方的力量都是不平衡的，其中必有一方居于支配地位，而另一方居于被支配的地位。事物的性质主要地是由取得支配地位的主要矛盾方面决定的。但是，主要的矛盾方面对事物性质的决定作用，只有在同非主要的矛盾方面的相互关联中才能实现，不能离开这种相互关联孤立地起作用。主要的矛盾方面和非主要的矛盾方面在一定条件下可以相互转化。矛盾双方在又同一又斗争的过程中,力量的对比会逐渐变化,一方由小变大,由弱变强，另一方则与此相反。这种变化达到某个关节点时，主要的矛盾方面和非主要的矛盾方面就互相易位，一事物就转化为他事物,原来的矛盾统一体就让位于新的矛盾统一体。一般说来，在新的矛盾统一体刚刚出现以及随后的一段时间内,主要的矛盾方面是新生的、向上发展的力量;而作为未来的、更高级的新事物的代表的非主要的矛盾方面一般还是弱小的。随着矛盾双方斗争的展开，主要的矛盾方面就逐渐丧失其新生的向上的性质，变成阻碍事物发展的衰颓力量,整个事物也就丧失了存在的合理性,变成了趋于灭亡的旧事物。与此同时，代表事物新的发展方向的非主要的矛盾方面则发展壮大，最终上升为主要的矛盾方面，使旧事物转化为新事物。这就是事物前进运动的内在根据。有时，新事物中残存着的代表旧事物的矛盾方面，使新事物倒退成为旧事物。但这只是事物发展过程中暂时出现的曲折现象，它终究要被新事物所战胜。新陈代谢是事物发展的必然趋势，是宇宙间永远不可抵抗的规律。
