无机涂料以无机材料为主要成膜物质的涂料。在建筑工程中常用的涂料是碱金属硅酸盐水溶液和胶体二氧化硅的水分散液。用以上两种成膜物，再加入颜料、填料以及各种助剂，可制成硅酸盐和硅溶胶（胶体二氧化硅）无机涂料，具有良好的耐水、耐碱、耐污染、耐气候等性能。可用作房屋建筑的内、外墙饰面涂料。碱金属硅酸盐水溶液 即水玻璃，具有一定的粘度，有较强的粘结力和成膜能力,成膜后形成"-Si-O-Si-"主链的涂膜。 由于碱金属离子大多易溶于水， 因此这类涂膜耐水性很差。 为了得到耐水性好的涂膜， 必须采用碱金属离子的固定化技术，使涂膜中的碱金属离子转化成水不溶物。除硅酸锂在成膜后可以吸收空气中的CO2,生成水不溶的碳酸锂而使涂膜具有足够的耐水性之外，其他如硅酸钠、硅酸钾，均需加热固化或添加固化剂，进行化学固化。固化剂的作用在于使缩合磷酸根与碱金属离子形成不溶于水的复盐。目前，用来配制水玻璃涂料的最常用的固化剂是缩合磷酸盐。胶体二氧化硅的水分散液 无水硅酸的胶体溶液作为无机涂料的成膜物，具有成膜后不再溶解的特性，涂膜耐水性好，可在常温下自干成膜。由于胶体二氧化硅的水分散液在成膜过程中体积发生较大的收缩，使涂膜强度降低，容易开裂剥落，因此在使用二氧化硅胶体水分散液时，需添加水溶性的合成树脂和水乳胶树脂作辅助成膜物，以增强涂膜的强度。
