海上移动式钻井装置主要用于钻探井的一种技术复杂的海上结构物，上装钻井、动力、通讯、导航等设备，安全救生和人员生活设施。通过钻井、取心、测试，来发现油、气田，并为地质研究提供重要依据。它是海上油、气勘探开发不可缺少的手段。移动式钻井装置分坐底式、自升式、半潜式和钻井船四种。1949年世界上出现了第一座坐底式平台──环球钻机40，由沉垫、立柱和上部甲板组成，靠沉垫的注、排水使整个平台下坐和上浮。沉垫至甲板的高度固定，只适用于水深变化不大、海底平坦的区域。1953年出现第一座自升式钻井平台，可适应水深的变化，工作水深达 30m，此后发展很快，成为海上最常用的一种装置。1962年出现了第一座半潜式钻井平台──碧水1号,可用于深水及海况恶劣的区域。各种移动式钻井装置性能见表。移动式钻井装置在海上事故统计，表明在早期占钻井装置总数7％，以后逐步降到1.2％。其中自升式占第一位，半潜式占第二位，钻井船占第三位。自升式平台在升降船及拖航时最容易发生事故。世界各国从设计制造到使用都制订了一系列规范和操作规程，以保证海上安全作业。参考书目ETA Offshore Seminars, The Technology of Offshore Drilling Completion and Production,The Petroleum Publ.Co.,Tulsa,1976.
