电流保护利用电力系统短路或异常工况下电流增大的特征所构成的继电保护。最原始形态的继电保护──熔断器就是一种电流保护。最简单的电流保护是反映相电流的三阶段式，即电流速断保护、限时电流速断保护和定时限过电流保护。为了提高电流保护的灵敏度，对于不对称相间短路故障可采用负序电流保护；对于大接地电流系统的接地短路故障，广泛采用零序电流保护（见对称分量法）。短路电流越大，故障越严重，继电保护动作跳闸应越快。电流保护动作时间与电流大小有关时称为反时限过电流保护，它具有动作时间和电流大小成反比的特性，被广泛用于保护电动机，可有效防止保护在电动机起动过程中的误动作。为了充分发挥设备潜力，大型发电机和变压器的过负荷保护宜采用这种反时限特性。为防止负序电流灼伤发电机转子，也应采用反时限特性的负序电流保护。过电流继电器与低电压继电器配合，可构成低压闭锁过流保护，能适当提高电流保护灵敏度。对于多侧电源电网，为了电流保护的选择性，一般需增设功率方向继电器。小接地电流系统的接地保护，有反应稳态五次谐波零序电流的，也有反应暂态零序电流首半波极性的。主要目的是为了解决选择性问题，以便在发生接地故障时，能迅速选出故障点，并将故障线段切除。系统运行方式的变化，对电流保护的运行性能影响很大。电流保护主要用于35kV及以下的电网。
