甚高频和超高频多普勒雷达工作在30~3000兆赫频段的气象多普勒雷达。一般具有很高的探测灵敏度。因探测高度范围可达1~100公里,所以又称为中层-平流层-对流层雷达 (MST radar)。它主要用于探测晴空大气的风、大气湍流和大气稳定度(见大气静力稳定度)等大气动力学参数的铅直分布。原理 这类雷达通过以下几类电磁波和大气的相互作用,对晴空大气进行探测:①由大气湍流运动引起的折射率不均匀结构对电磁波的散射;②稳定大气分层结构对入射电磁波的部分反射;③有时出现于中层大气的自由电子对电磁波的散射;④中层大气中的流星余迹散射。散射体积内空气的运动,使雷达回波具有多普勒频偏。结构 MST 雷达的结构和气象多普勒雷达大致相同。其特点在于:它们一般配备了大型天线(天线阵),有些甚高频段雷达的天线阵,尺度达 30~200米,采用半波振子阵或八木天线振子阵,以相控方式实现波束扫描。超高频段雷达采用直径几十米的可动抛物面天线,这类雷达的发射功率在几百千瓦至 2兆瓦之间,发射功率和天线面积的乘积值在106~1010瓦·米2之间。此外,为获得高灵敏度和高空间分辨率,在脉冲发射体制和回波数据处理方面,也采取一些技术措施。用途 利用回波的多普勒频谱可以进行下述各项测量:①探测大气风场的铅直分布。同一仰角,空间分辨率约为 150~1000米,采用脉冲压缩技术后,分辨率已可达到15米。②探测大气湍流结构。可以给出平均折射率湍流结构常数(C厒)的铅直分布。再引入一些大气湍流模式后,可以推算出湍流耗散率的铅直分布。③探测对流层顶高度及逆温层的高度和厚度。目前,甚高频和超高频多普勒雷达还只能测定上述气象要素的铅直廓线及其时间变化,而不能给出三维空间分布资料。参考书目K.S.Gage,B.B.Balsley,Doppler Radar Probing of the Clear Atmosphere,Bulletin of American MeteorologicalSociety,Vol.59,No.9,pp.1074~1093,1978.
