颗粒性与颗粒度胶片上所记录的影像放大到一定程度时，会出现密度不均匀的颗粒状形态，这种颗粒形态在观察者视觉上的反应称为感光材料的颗粒性,它是一种主观的印象。对这种不均匀性的客观计量叫做颗粒度。颗粒度是感光胶片，特别是底片的一个非常重要的性能，它与影像质量的关系和噪声与声音质量的关系相似。因此，颗粒度被认为是光学信号传递中的噪声，也有人称之为"噪影"。颗粒大的胶片，不仅会使影像的结构粗糙损伤摄影艺术效果和降低影像质量，并且会象微弱的声音被淹没在噪声中一样，把大量的影像细部吞噬于变化无常的颗粒之中，使影像丧失质感。胶片的颗粒度对于电影画面与声音的技术质量有更为重要的影响，这是由于影片是在高倍率放大条件下观赏的，易产生粗粒的感觉；放映时，画面在不断地更迭，映现在银幕上的颗粒位置也随之不断变化。所造成的效果似布满画面上的小虫不断地在银幕上蠕动;更为严重时,表现为大小不同的黑白或彩色斑点，似沸水一样在银幕上翻腾。粗糙的颗粒会使声带在还音时，产生令人讨厌的杂音并使高频部分受到损失。胶片颗粒度的大小，不仅取决于溴化银晶体的平均尺寸，更主要的是取决于它们在乳剂层中的分布均匀度。人们所看到的颗粒现象并非单个的银粒或单个的染料，而是溴化银在乳剂层中分布不均匀造成的。银粒比较密集处，给人以黑块的感觉；银粒比较稀疏的部分，给人以空白的感觉。在发展过程中，曾出现过几种测量与表示颗粒度的方法。通用的公认比较好的方法是均方根颗粒度(RMS颗粒度)。这种方法是:将受测胶片用一系列不同曝光量均匀曝光,经显影后选取密度为1.0的样品，用测微密度计进行扫描测量,测量出1000个以上的数值后,算出所测密度的平均值,然后再算出每次测量与平均值之差,按照下式进行计算：式中d1，d2，...,dn为每次测得密度与平均密度的偏差值，n为测量的总次数。一般电影胶片的RMS颗粒度在5与15之间(最低为3.5，最高不超过20)，数字越小,颗粒越细。有的高感光度黑白负片的颗粒度为15（颗粒较粗）；彩色正片5254和黑白正片的颗粒度为 9；Ⅱ型彩色负片的颗粒度为5。乳剂中溴化银晶体的大小与颗粒度有直接的关系。一般地说，高感光度乳剂的颗粒要粗些，这是由于大晶体受光照射面大，显影后形成的密度也较高。显影条件对颗粒度也有一定的影响。显影液的成分、显影温度、显影γ值与密度以及加工过程中温度的变化、干燥条件等，都在不同程度上影响颗粒度。大多数黑白胶片的颗粒度随着密度的上升而增大，因此,曝光过度,对黑白影像的颗粒度有不良的影响。彩色胶片的颗粒度不随密度上升而加大，在高密度处其颗粒度反而有所下降。无论是黑白片或彩色片，它们的颗粒度都随显影γ值的提高而增大。
