电气照明系统利用电能转变为光能进行人工照明的各种设施。电气照明技术是一门综合性技术，它以光学、电学、建筑学、生理学等多方面的知识作为基础。电气照明设施主要包括照明电光源（例如灯泡、灯管）、照明灯具和照明线路三部分。其中，照明电光源和灯具的组合，称作电照明器。照明电光源即人工照明使用的以电为能源的发光体。按其发光的原理可以分为热辐射光源、气体放电光源和半导体光源三大类（见照明光源）。电气照明系统可按照明方式分为三种：一般照明、局部照明和混合照明。按其使用目的可分为6种:①正常照明。正常情况下的室内外照明，对电源控制无特殊要求。②事故照明。当正常照明因故障而中断时，能继续提供合适照度的照明。一般设置在容易发生事故的场所和主要通道的出入口。③值班照明。供正常工作时间以外的、值班人员使用的照明。④警卫照明。用于警卫地区和周界附近的照明，通常要求较高的照度和较远的照明距离。⑤障碍照明。装设在建筑物上、构筑物上以及正在修筑和翻修和道路上，作为障碍标志的照明。⑥装饰照明。用于美化环境或增添某种气氛的照明，如节日的彩灯、舞厅的多色灯光等。照明线路和供电方式要求安全可靠、经济合理、电压稳定。由于电气照明线路与人们接触的机会较多，所以电气照明设备外露的、不应带电的金属部分都须绝缘或接地。重要场合的照明和事故照明，要有两个电源供电，确保供电可靠。照明线路最好专用，以免受其他负荷引起的大电压波动，影响电光源的寿命和照明质量。
