单相异步电动机用单相交流电供电的异步电动机。所用电源方便,结构简单,价格低廉,运行可靠,广泛应用于办公室、家庭和医院等只有单相电源的场合。但它比三相异步电动机效率低,体积也大。因而单相电动机只做成小型的,其功率从零点几千瓦到几千瓦。单相异步电动机的定子一般有两个绕组,即主绕组和副绕组。它们沿圆周错开一定的空间角(一般是90°电角度)。主、副绕组的电流在时间上也有一定的相位差。单相异步电动机的转子均为笼式绕组。通常主、副绕组的磁通势不一定相等,时间也不一定正好差90°,故运行时,一般产生椭圆形旋转磁场。如单相异步电动机只有主绕组接单相电源时,定子绕组便产生脉振磁场,它可分解成正序旋转磁场和负序旋转磁场,两者均会在转子绕组里感应电动势。笼型转子绕组是自行闭合的,电流均可流通,正、负序磁场各自产生电磁转矩。它们与转矩的关系如图所示。图中T+表示正序电磁转矩,T-表示负序电磁转矩,T代表合成转矩。在转速为零时,合成转矩为零,即没有起动转矩。因此,只有主绕组接电源不能自行起动。一旦起动后,便有电磁转矩。为了获得起动转矩,单相异步电动机一般装有副绕组。采取电阻分相或电容分相的办法使主,副绕组中电流有一定的相位差,从而产生起动转矩(见分相异步电动机)。
