教学内容学校给学生传授的知识和技能，灌输的思想和观点，培养的习惯和行为等的总和，也叫课程。在原始社会，学校还没产生，当时的成人给儿童传授生产经验和群居生活共同遵守的风俗习惯，这可以说是最早的教学内容。随着社会的发展，文字的创造，学校的产生，教学内容不断丰富概括，并形成了体系。在西方，奴隶社会时期,如古希腊,有以体育和军事训练为主要教学内容的斯巴达；也有以读、写、算和音乐、体育为主要教学内容的雅典。欧洲封建社会的学校，大都由教会举办，以宗教教义为主要教学内容。在资本主义时期,普通学校的教学内容,有的偏重拉丁文、希腊文等古典语文，有的偏重数学、物理等实用学科。由于生产的发展和科学的进步，学校教学内容日益丰富。设置的学科种类日渐增多,其中也包括职业训练的学科。在中国，奴隶社会的教学内容主要有礼、乐、射、御、书、数六艺。封建社会的教学内容主要有五经和四书(见五经、四书）。而生产经验和生活实用知识、技能的传授在广大劳动人民当中，主要依靠父子相传或师徒授受。虽然有时也把实用科学如医学、数学等列为教学内容，但很不普遍。直到近代, 由于生产力的发展和 "富国强兵"的需要，才把数学、物理、化学、博物等自然科学列入学校的教学内容。中华人民共和国成立以后，对各级学校的教学内容不断改革。改革的主要方向是废除宣扬封建的、买办的、法西斯主义思想的教学内容，用辩证唯物主义和历史唯物主义的观点来统率材料；取消烦琐、陈腐、庞杂的教学内容,力求使它在实现社会主义教育目的的前提下,既适合儿童、少年和青年身心发展的阶段，又符合当代科学技术发展的水平。在教育科学研究的基础上教学内容还将不断改进和更新，以满足为社会主义现代化建设培养人才的需要。中国现在把规定教学内容的文件称做教学计划、教学大纲和教科书，它们是教学内容的具体化。
