快速模具制造以快速成型制作的实体模型，结合精铸、金属喷涂、电镀及电极研磨等技术可以快速制造出模具，其制造周期一般为传统的数控切削方法的1/5～1/10，而成本却仅为其1/3～1/5。根据模具材料、生产成本、RP原型的材料、生产批量、模具的精度要求已开发出多种多样的工艺方法。 1）用快速成型件作母模，制作硅橡胶模 当制造的零件件数较少（批量在20～50件）时，一般采用以RP原型作母模，采用室温硫化的有机硅橡胶浇注制作硅橡胶模。由于硅橡胶良好的柔性和弹性，对于结构复杂、花纹精细、无拔模斜度（甚至有一定倒拔模斜度）以及具有深凹槽的零件来说，制件浇注完成后均可直接取出。该工艺方法可以快速、容易而廉价地小批量生产各种塑料零件和石蜡模型，在航空航天、体育用品、玩具和装饰设备等领域应用广泛。制作生产周期为1周左右。成本为钢模的1/15-1/20。 下图为云南光学仪器厂开发的望远镜外壳快速模具制作案例。通过制作RP模型，采用硅橡胶模翻制ABS塑料样件，云南光学仪器厂快速地实现了新产品开发，含RP原型，制作生产周期为6天。 2）金属喷涂（Metal Spraying）制模法 当模具要求的寿命在3000件以下时，一般采用以RP原型作母模，将低熔点的熔化金属（如锌铝合金）充分雾化后以一定的速度喷射到母模的表面，形成模具型腔表面，充填背衬复合材料，制作锌铝合金软模具。该工艺方法简单，周期短，型腔表面及其精细花纹一次同时形成。其制作周期为1～2周，成本为数控法加工钢模的1/3-1/5。 3）用快速成型件作母模，制作钢模 当模具要求的寿命在3000件以上时，可以采用以RP原型作母模，翻制由环氧树脂与碳化硅混合物构成的整体研磨轮（3D砂轮），在石墨电极成型机上研磨出整体石墨电极，或利用电化学原理通过电铸的方法使铜沉积在RP原型表面约2～3mm厚，移去RP原型，得到电极壳体，充填背衬材料，制成整体铜电极。利用以上整体石墨电极或整体铜电极通过电火花加工制造钢模具。该模具制造工艺方法避免了CNC加工，节约了CNC编程及加工时间，复形精度也较高。其模具制作周期为3～4周，成本为数控法加工钢模的1/2-1/3。 下图为一拖集团公司开发的发动机用连杆快速模具制作案例。通过制作连杆RP模型，采用石墨电极整体成型技术制作连杆石墨电极，通过电火花加工制造连杆钢模具。制作生产周期为3周。
