著者号码表将众多著者名称按某种检字法顺序编排而成的一览表。主要供图书馆编目人员在文献编目和分类时区分同类图书的排列次序。著录号码表按所采用的号码制可分为单纯号码制著者号码表和混合号码制著者号码表两类。单纯号码制著者号码表由单一的阿拉伯数字组成。混合号码制著者号码表则由著者姓氏(或名称首字)的首字母(或字符)和阿拉伯数字组成。按编制方法可分为查号法著者号码表和拼号法著者号码表两类。按所适用的语种可分为中文著者号码表、西文著者号码表、俄文著者号码表、日文著者号码表等等。中文著者号码表 是以汉字检字法为基础编制的。可分为汉字形序法著者号码表和汉字音序法著者号码表两类。汉字形序法著者号码表一般采用单纯号码制。如《杜氏著者号码表》 (杜定友编，按汉语笔划检字法编排);《万氏著者号码表》(万国鼎编,按汉字母笔检字法编排);《笔划字顺著者号码表》(王凤翥编)。汉字音序法著者号码表一般采有混合号码制，如《拼音著者号码表》(钱亚新编,按国音罗马字母编排)、《汉语拼音著者号码表》(袁勇进、周树基编)以及汪家榕、李修宇、侯有德等合编的汉语拼音著者号码表。由于汉字本身的特点及存在众多的汉字排检法，中文著者号码表的统一甚为困难。20世纪80年代，中国图书馆学界曾对中文著者号码表的统一和标准化问题进行了大量研究，1988年在杭州召开的专题研讨会上，多数人认为汉语拼音著者号码表将成为中文著者号码表发展的主流。西文著者号码表 以C.A.卡特于1887年编印的《著者号码表》最为著名，为很多国家广泛采用。下面是该号码表的一个片段： 1896年该号码表出版改编本，习称"卡特-桑伯恩三位数著者号码表"。卡特的 《著者号码表》有2位数表和3位数表之分，二者的编排方法稍有差异。俄文著者号码表 主要为苏联图书馆学家Л.Б.哈芙金娜1931年仿卡特《著者号码表》编的 2位数和 3位数《著者号码表》,三位数表实例如下:中国图书馆界在中华人民共和国成立以后普遍用此处理俄文图书，并出版有中文本。1937年中国印行过胡正支编的《俄文著者排列法》。日文著者号码表 主要有植村长三郎编的 《著者号码简明表》和森清编的《日本著者号码表》。他们都是仿照卡特表编制的。前者采用日本假名和阿拉伯数字混合号码制。后者则采用日本罗马字(黑本式)和阿拉伯数字混合号码制。中国1933年曾印行过供中、日文图书用的《中日著者号码表》(张英敏编)。见索书号、同类图书排列法。
