电离层探测电离层探测ionosphericsounding获取电离层物理特性参量及其分布、变化规律的工作。主要物理特性参量包括电离层组成成分、总电子含量、电子密度、离子密度、离子温度、电场强度、磁场强度和不均匀体尺度等。1924年12月，SirE.V.阿普尔顿和M.A.F.巴尼特进行了用连续波法探测电离层高度的试验。1925年，G.布雷特和M.A.图夫发明的电离层垂直探测装置，成为后来地面探测电离层的基本手段。1949年，在V-2火箭上安装的朗缪尔探针，开创了电离层直接探测的先例。电离层探测分间接探测和直接探测两种方法。①间接探测是根据电磁波通过电离层传播时与等离子体相互作用所产生的电磁效应或传播特征，推算出电离层特性参量。间接探测主要包括电离层垂直探测、电离层高频斜向探测、非相干散射探测和电磁波电离层吸收测量等。②直接探测是利用火箭、卫星等空间飞行器将探测装置携带到电离层中，测量电离层介质对装置的直接作用，以获得电离层特性参量。探测装置主要包括电子探针、离子探针、质谱探针、磁力仪等。直接探测与间接探测相比，精度高，能测到间接探测方法不易测到的离子成分、离子密度、离子温度和空间磁场等。
