110超远程精密跟踪雷达50年代起,国外就发展了弹道导弹武器等。我国为了积极防御,能探测几千里以外的入侵目标,必须研制超远程的预警、跟踪雷达,对外空目标的探测、跟踪,建立弹道导弹预警(空间监视)系统、防御系统。1958年提出研制超远程雷达。雷达技术专家申仲义担起了这一十分艰巨的任务。他带领14所工程技术人员从预先研究开始,在突破多项关键技术后才进入工程设计阶段。1959年他组织研制一部110模拟试验雷达,首次收到了离地球38万公里的月球的较强回波,取得了观测外空目标的初步成果。1965年到1970年又开展了卡塞格伦式单脉冲天线、脉冲压缩、脉冲多卜勒测速、参量放大器、先进计算机的应用、大型天线结构及转台的研究。上述各种新技术的突破,为研制超远程110跟踪雷达作了前期工程准备,进入了工程实施阶段。1977年,我国第一部超远程跟踪雷达装备了部队。它能在2000多公里以外跟踪非合作的外空目标,在我国发射洲际火箭、卫星等工程中多次执行了跟踪测量国外的外空目标的任务。110雷达的研制成功,使我国成为世界上第三个拥有这种大型雷达的国家。
