磁层甚低频发射磁层中除由雷电辐射产生的哨声外,还存在一些天然的和受其他电磁波触发的甚低频电磁波。这些电磁波的频率范围与哨声相近,但出现的持续时间和频率-时间关系却多种多样,从持续时间只有几分之一秒的离散型到持续几十分钟以上的宽频带连续发射型,统称为甚低频发射。在离散型甚低频发射中,准周期型的电波(如合声)由从10赫到 5千赫的许多频率的上升调和下降调叠加而成,多发生在等离子层外的日照面赤道附近。触发离散型(如受哨声触发)发射,频率与哨声的频率范围相同,最常见的发生在哨声的上截止频率处(=/2,为哨声传播路径顶点的电子回旋频率)。它有上升调也有下降调,形状很不规则,在等离子层顶附近出现最多,有时还有准周期型的触发发射。在高、中纬度地区,大功率电力网的高次谐波也在磁层触发甚低频发射,在沿等离子层顶内侧能观测到在这些高次谐波上叠加有上升调或下降调的离散型或准周期型的触发发射,它与合声不同之处是依附在工频的高次谐波上。受人工发射机信号触发的甚低频发射,依赖于发射信号的脉冲宽度、频率和功率,也依赖于电离层与磁层的条件。在适当的条件下,仅有100瓦的奥米加导航电信号也能触发甚低频发射。在宽频带连续型甚低频发射中,等离子层嘶声的频率为10赫~5千赫,在等离子层顶和等离子层内能观测到。极光区嘶声的频率从几千赫至 100千赫。它们和上述受触发的离散型有明显的准相干波列不同,嘶声表现为非相干的,类似于随机噪声的宽带特性,极光区嘶声发生在极光区上空2000公里附近,与极光的出现有很大的相关性。此外,还有一种在地面上接收不到、但在卫星上能接收到的高于电子回旋频率的右旋非常波模电磁波,因为频率高于哨声模电磁波,称为高通噪声。它是地球发出的、波长为千米数量级的无线电辐射,又称地球千米辐射。磁层是能谱宽广(从等离子层内部几个电子伏的低能粒子到辐射带中高达几百兆电子伏的高能粒子)的空间等离子体,在磁层中存在等离子体不稳定性,甚低频发射正是这些不稳定性所激发的电磁波。这是60年代以来的新发现(见磁层电磁波)。通过实验证实,在近赤道平面区由捕获的高能粒子与波产生的回旋共振不稳定性产生触发型甚低频发射;大功率电力网激发的甚低频发射,引起捕获粒子的投掷角散射,从而使高能粒子沉降;人工发射信号受波与粒子的相互作用后被放大达30分贝等现象,推动了理论的发展。
