《全国重要文物建筑简目》中国现代最早记载全国重要古建筑目录的专书。由国立清华大学与私立中国营造学社合设的中国建筑研究所受中国人民解放军有关部门委托编辑，梁思成任主编，自1948年12月开始编写，1949年 3月成书。简目按民国三十八年(1949)三月以前的省、市、县行政区排列，共收入 22 个省、市的重要古建筑和石窟、雕塑等文物465处,并加注了文物建筑的详细所在地、文物的性质种类 (例如：佛寺、道观、陵墓、桥梁......)、文物的创建或重修年代以及文物的价值和特殊意义，条理分明，简明扼要，便于查阅。为了对特殊重要的文物建筑加强保护，简目将文物建筑分为 4级，以圆圈作标志，用圈数多少表示其重要性。此种分级对待的原则为后来文物分级管理的办法提供了先例。编此简目的主要目的是供中国人民解放军作战及接管时，保护文物建筑之用。1949年 3月，解放军全面进军前，该书以手刻油印本首次发至军中，1949年 6月由华北高等教育委员会图书文物处再次铅印发行。1950年5 月又由中央人民政府文化部文物局再次印行，普遍发给全国各级政府，在以后各省、市、自治区的文物普查和文物保护单位评定等级中起了积极的作用。
