街巷中国古代的城镇道路。沿革 汉代称城市干道为街，居住区内道路为巷。街字本指四通的道路。战国以后的里坊制城市，坊间道路称街,坊内道路称巷。街中又以通城门的为主干道,如汉长安城的"八街",唐长安城的"六街"。隋唐时,里坊面积增大，坊内开辟十字干道，称十字街，坊内支路称曲。宋代以后的城市撤去坊墙，改为街巷制，沿用里坊制城市的方格网街道，并把坊内街、曲改造成以东西向为主的巷,以利建造南北向的住宅。巷可直通干道,交通大为便利，但大片房屋密集，无坊墙阻隔，火灾极易蔓延。南宋初规定，街、巷每隔一百间的宽度留一条一丈宽的火巷(或称火弄)。元明两代沿用这种道路网。街和巷作为城镇道路的名称沿用至今。南方有些城市还称巷为弄(或衖)，北京多称胡同。这种方格网街加东西向巷的道路系统是中国宋代以后城市街道布局的主要方式。此外，也有为了适应地形或扩建改建时形成斜行、环行或放射状道路网的城市。宽度和结构 街巷的宽度按重要性和交通量分级。《考工记》记载周王城街宽以车轨数计,干道宽九轨,顺城街宽七轨。唐长安城街宽分九级,分别相当于150、130、120、110、70、60、50、40、25米，坊内十字街宽约15米，小巷宽约2米。汉长安城的大街分三条道，中央御路宽约20米，两旁道路各宽约12米，左入右出，中间隔排水明沟，道旁植杨树。唐长安城大街植槐树为行道树，也筑明沟排水。汉、唐都城都是土路面。宋代南方一些城市出现砖铺路面。但元大都城街仍为土路，石砌明沟排水。明、清北京城也是土路，只有局部御路铺砌石板；并由明渠暗沟和排污河组成庞大的排雨、排污系统，与护城河相通。里坊制的城市规定，只有重要衙署、寺观和府邸才可在坊墙上对正大街开门，因此街道两侧一般只能看到坊门、坊墙、行道树和少量宫观府第。街景整齐宽阔，但很单调。街巷制的城市则沿街设店、建宅，十字路口建钟鼓楼，跨街建牌坊（见坊表），道路逐渐被侵占变窄，繁华街景随之出现。参考书目刘敦桢主编：《中国古代建筑史》，中国建筑工业出 版社，北京，1980。
