电磁连续介质理论理性力学的研究内容之一，主要研究电磁场与可变形物体或流动物质的相互作用的理论。R.A.图平从连续统观点出发，曾比较系统地研究这类问题。1956年，他提出了有限变形弹性电介质的静力理论，1963年建立起动力理论。从此，电磁连续介质理论便成为理性力学的一个重要组成部分。后来不少学者从事这方面的研究工作。近年来，探讨力、热和电磁场耦合作用的连续介质理论已逐渐形成。这一理论的框架由原始元、基本定律和本构关系组成。除热力物质理论中的基本定律和本构公理外，电磁连续介质理论还包括高斯定律、法拉第定律、安培定律、电荷守恒定律和磁通量守恒定律以及时间反转公理。根据相容性公理，所有本构关系必须与基本定律相容，而且还必须服从熵不等式和时间反转公理。在此公理体系中，对电磁热弹性固体物质和电磁热粘性流体物质这两大类特殊物质的研究特别重要，因为它们已把古典的各种个别理论都作为特殊情形包括进去。电磁场与运动的连续介质相互作用的完整理论应建立在洛伦兹不变性的基础上，于是开展了相对论性电磁连续介质理论的研究。70年代初以来，法国学者G.A.莫甘等人开始研究微磁学，即统一地研究包括磁自旋在内的电磁场与热弹性介质相互作用的理论。微磁学的相对论性不变性理论的基础是：①四维时空(闵可夫斯基)处理，②变分原理，③不变性要求。由于理论上和近代科学技术的需要，电磁连续介质理论越来越引起人们的重视。参考书目A.
