社区旅游在旅游学界，早在二十世纪七十年代，已经有学者开始从社区的角度探讨旅游发展过程中社区居民的参与性问题，butler(1975)、kent(1977)、cohen(1979)、de kadt(1979)、boissevain (1979)以及smith(1980)分别从旅游影响、居民态度、游客特征等不同方面对社区旅游进行了深入的探讨，在案例数量、成果质量上都取得了显著的成绩。最早系统化地进行社区旅游研究并将社区参与的概念引入到旅游研究的是墨菲（peter e.murphy）,墨菲在其著名的《旅游：社区方法》（《tourism:a community approach》）首次正式地、系统化地从社区的角度来研究旅游发展过程中的社区居民参与性问题。二十世纪九十年代以后，西方旅游学界对旅游发展中的参与性问题更为关注，国际著名旅游学术刊物《旅游研究年鉴》（《annals of tourism research》）、《旅游管理》（《tourism management》）都开办了专辑对社区旅游进行讨论，使相关研究出现了一个新的高潮。同时，有关社区参与理论研究的成熟和实践经验的积累也使得社区旅游逐渐成长为一个多专业参与的新兴交叉学科，随之产生的旅游人类学(tourism anthropology)、旅游社会学（tourism sociology）都得到了各个专业领域的广泛接受。从20世纪90年代开始，国内学者开始关注旅游开发中的社区参与问题，近些年来，有不少学者开始关注民族地区旅游开发过程中的社区参与问题，通过对cnki的高级检索，通过词条“旅游”、“参与”、“民族”利用摘要搜索进行限制检索，共搜索到1994年到间的91篇学术论文，运用关键字经过进一步的排除外，共有19篇论文是关于民族地区社区旅游参与问题的，从内容上看，多集中对西南民族地区村寨旅游开发的社区参与进行研究，而且多为静态研究，从某一方面进行研究，缺乏全景式的动态研究，为数不多的个案研究论证力量也略显单薄；从时间上看，关注的时间并不长，而且大多数研究成果集中在最近两年；从研究方法上看，以往研究该问题的多为旅游学者，近些年来，不少社会学、民族学、人类学学者也介入到该问题的研究，但遗憾并没有出现很好的多学科融合性研究，而且多为个案研究，提出的参与式旅游开发模式有限，缺乏真正意义的创新。关于社区旅游的定义，目前无公认的定义，在国内，引用较多的是唐顺铁（1998）所下的定义：从社区的角度考虑旅游目的地的建设，以社区的互动理论指导旅游区的总体规划和布局，通过游湖旅游社区的结构提高旅游流的效率，谋求旅游业及旅游目的地的经济效益、环境效益和社会效益的协调同意和最优化。社区旅游为寻求实现旅游页可持续发展提供了一个新途径。
