信息社会信息的搜集、处理、流通、控制和利用高度发达的社会。在这种社会中，信息和知识成为经济发展中超过劳力和资本的最重要的因素。信息社会的概念最早是由美国社会学家、哈佛大学教授D.贝尔提出来的。他在1973年发表《后工业化社会的到来──社会预测尝试》一书，根据他对美国产业结构的分析，第一次提出美国正向后工业化社会发展，并提出后工业化社会的5 大特征：①经济结构从商品经济向服务型经济转变；②职业分布表明技术阶层正在崛起；③理论知识成为创新的源泉和制定社会改革的依据；④技术控制和技术评估决定未来的方向； ⑤ 决策将依靠"智能技术"。1977年，美国经济学家M.U.波拉特在他的《信息经济学》一书中第一次对经济中的信息活动进行了定量分析，并对全部产业作出4 种划分：农业、工业、服务业和信息业。在此基础上,贝尔1979年又发表《信息经济》一书，明确提出后工业化社会就是信息社会，信息和理论知识是未来社会的战略资源，它将引起现代历史的转折。进入20世纪80年代，由于微型计算机的发展和广泛使用，再加上与数据通信、卫星通信的结合，在发达的工业化国家，新的信息技术已渗透到经济各领域，也影响到人们的工作和生活，越来越多的人开始感受到社会信息化是时代的潮流，论述社会信息化的文章和专著也随之增多。美国社会学家A.托夫勒和J.奈斯比特先后发表了《第三次浪潮》和《大趋势》，他们从社会现象入手，揭示了信息社会的发展与今天工业化社会的不同。信息社会的特点是：①从事信息业的人占多数，信息业是经济中的基干产业；②信息是经济发展中与能源、材料并驾齐驱，甚至更为重要的战略资源；③信息化带动了技术综合化，大规模的横向联合将成为经济和社会中的一大主流；④信息技术的发展促使决策走向科学化、智能化、民主化;⑤信息的社会化将促使权力分散化;⑥信息通信系统的发展促进经济国际化；⑦教育水平的提高和教育普及，终身教育是信息社会的基础，也是社会信息化的结果；⑧人们在生活多样化的同时，将追求更丰富的文化生活。信息社会是人类社会在技术经济发展中的一个新阶段。现在还只是看到它的起点，即电子信息技术的利用已经使人们部分地从简单脑力劳动中解放出来。今后,光信息技术、生物信息技术以至人工智能的发展将使信息收集、处理、传输、控制和利用更加有效,更加复杂,甚至部分代替人的思维功能，使人们可以从事更富有创造性的劳动。到那时，社会生产力的发展和社会组织体制的发展将是今天无法想象的。这正如工业社会是对农业社会的一次飞跃一样，信息社会是对工业社会的一个巨大的飞跃。
