文字狱文字狱中国明清时因文字犯禁或借文字罗织罪名清除异己而设置的刑狱。明文字狱始见于洪武七年（1374）。时苏州知府魏观将新府衙建于张士诚宫殿旧址，高启作《上梁文》中又有“龙蟠虎踞”四字，因此触犯明太祖朱元璋忌讳而被杀。洪武十七年以后，又先后发生多起因上贺表、谢笺引起的文字狱。据载因当时勋臣不满于朱元璋重文轻武，遂进谗言“文人善讥讪”，朱元璋从此对天下章奏动生疑忌。洪武二十九年礼部颁行谢表式后，才不再发生以贺表、谢笺获罪之事。但洪武三十年南北榜案中，考官因所进试卷中有“一气交而万物成”及“至尊者君，至卑者臣”，被认为讥讽朝廷，有凶恶字而获罪。明初文字狱贯穿洪武一朝，是明太祖朱元璋为推行文化专制统治所采取的极端手段，并为后世封建统治者所效法。清代文字狱，一般以康熙二年(1663)的庄廷《明史》案为起始，亦有追溯到顺治五年(1648)毛重倬等仿刻《制艺序》案的，下限则在乾隆五十三年(1788)的贺世盛《笃国策》案。在康、雍、乾三朝的百余年间，文字狱多达上百起，而且愈演愈烈。清代前期文字狱大致有3种情况：①清先世曾臣服于明朝，受官袭爵，闻命即从。入主中原之后，清廷对此段史事讳莫如深，因此，不仅将旧有史籍刊削、禁毁，而且对凡继续编写乃至收藏者，则以“大逆”之罪滥加诛戮。②清初反清思想久久不能消弭，尤其是汉族士大夫眷恋故明，宣扬“夷夏之防”一类思想，对巩固清廷统治极为不利。为了强化满洲贵族的封建专制统治，对反清思想就势必要用暴力加以打击。③康雍之际，清皇族中权力斗争空前激化，史称夺嫡之争。雍正帝即位之后，为了巩固已得的胜利，除杀戮夺嫡诸王外，不惜借助文字狱来打击“党附诸王”的势力。此外，尚有皇帝滥施专制淫威而出现的文字狱。文字狱是巩固封建专制统治的政治措施。清代前期文字狱的冤滥，遏制言论，禁锢思想，造成了“万马齐喑”的严重历史后果；它极大地桎梏了学术思想的发展，助长了阿谀奉承、诬告陷害之风，是历史发展中的浊流。到乾隆末叶，一方面清廷已经通过文字狱达到了预期目的，另一方面，隐伏着的社会危机日益加剧，清代统治者面临着比反清思想更为严重的社会问题，文字狱遂趋于平息。
