新编历史题材剧目1949年后编写的反映历史人物和历史事件的剧目。一般称为新编历史剧。其题材范围，包括从上古时代直到五四运动以前的历史。此外，采用民间传统和神话寓言等编写的历史故事剧，也都包容在内，统称为新编历史题材剧目。历史题材从来是中国戏曲创作的一个重要内容，作者从各自的历史观出发，在民间传说、演义、故事以及正史的基础上,作大量的艺术加工与虚构,以适应舞台演出。宋元以来为人民群众所喜闻乐见的三国、隋唐、水浒等历史故事剧，数量很多。古代和近代的戏曲作家和演员,往往借用历史题材,抒发情怀,寄托政治抱负,以古鉴今或借古喻今。如元代的《汉宫秋》、《赵氏孤儿》，明代的《浣纱记》、《宝剑记》,清代的《长生殿》,近代汪笑侬的《党人碑》，以及20世纪30年代梅兰芳的《抗金兵》，程砚秋的《荒山泪》，周信芳的《徽钦二帝》、《洪承畴》等，在当时都产生过一定的积极作用，有些并成为戏曲史上的名作，传唱至今。但这些作品的时代局限性比较明显，往往不能科学地反映出历史的真实。中华人民共和国成立后，用历史唯物主义观点编写新的历史剧，是摆在戏曲工作者面前的一个新课题。在如何准确地评价历史人物，正确地反映历史真实，克服反历史主义偏向，做到历史真实与艺术真实相结合，历史剧的"古为今用"等方面，从理论到实践都进行过不少有益的探索和尝试。1962年《戏剧报》编辑部曾编选《历史剧论集》出版。新编历史题材剧目,既区别于过去的历史剧,又不同于整理改编传统剧目，它要求剧作者具有科学的历史观,善于甄别、分析、运用有关的史料或传说，同时又必须合情合理地发挥艺术想象，塑造出栩栩如生的艺术形象,还要尽可能地调动戏曲舞台艺术的各种手段，施展演员的艺术特长,做到历史真实与艺术真实的和谐、统一。它是个选取题材十分广阔的天地，凡是能够鼓舞人民爱国、进步，奋发向上，提高和丰富人民精神生活、道德修养，给人以文史知识和美的享受的历史题材、古代民间传说，以至神话寓言故事，都是人民群众所需要的。早在革命战争年代，中国共产党领导下的戏曲工作者编演的《逼上梁山》、《三打祝家庄》、《江汉渔歌》、《九件衣?贰?《闯王进京》等，就已从不同角度创造性地作出了有益的尝试。中华人民共和国成立后，在"两条腿走路"、"三者并举"的戏曲剧目政策的指引下，新编历史题材剧目的创作，取得了新的成绩，其中影响较大的作品有：京剧《海瑞罢官》、《海瑞上疏》、《满江红》、《强项令》，扬剧《百岁挂帅》,川剧《夫妻桥》,绍剧《于谦》，彩调《刘三姐》、越剧《红楼梦》，粤剧《关汉卿》，黔剧《奢香夫人》等。
