信息产业与信息的生产、搜集、存储、加工、传播和服务相关的多种行业的总称。是近几十年发展起来的一项新兴产业。20世纪50年代以来，随着社会经济的发展和信息技术的进步，信息需求和信息服务日益增长。美国学者D.贝尔曾将经济部门划分为农业及采掘，制造业，信息业3 个部分。并强调知识和信息是后工业社会的"关键变量"。经济统计表明,近100多年来伴随经济的增长, 农业和工业的就业人口逐步减少，流通、消费、服务部门的就业人口增多，其中信息服务业增长的比率十分突出。附图反映出美国信息产业劳动力所占比例的增长趋势。信息产业尚无公认一致的范围划分和统一的计算方法。一般认为,信息产业主要包含4个部分：①信息设备制造业，包括计算机及外部设备、集成电路、通信广播和办公室自动化设备等。②信息传播报道业，包括新闻、广播、出版、印刷、声像、数据库等。③信息技术服务业，包括计算机信息处理、信息提供、信息技术的研究开发、软件等。④信息流通服务业，包括图书馆、情报服务机构、教育、邮政、电信、网络通讯等。与此相关，美国把从事报纸、杂志、书籍、广播、电视、电影这 6种大众传播媒介的行业,统称为传播产业或媒介产业。这一概念已为世界相当多的国家所采用。此外，美国经济学家F.马克卢普1962年提出过与信息产业难以明确区分的知识产业的概念。他所定义的知识产业的范围包括:①教育，②研究与开发,③传播(通信),④信息机械(设备)，⑤信息服务。据他计算,1958年美国国民生产总值的29％(1364亿美元)属于知识产业；1947～1958年, 美国知识产业以每年10.6％的速度递增，为国民生产总值增长率的2倍。与马克卢普的广义定义相比,日本提出了信息产业的狭义定义，即只包括计算机与通信相结合的各种信息服务业。在信息产业的计算方法上，美国经济学家M.U.波拉特将整个经济划分为6大部门,其中信息产业包括他所称的"第一信息部门"和"第二信息部门"。他推算出1967年美国有近一半的国民生产总值，一半以上的工资总额来自信息部门。信息产业的发展是必然的趋势。不少国家的政府都十分重视这个领域。如日本从1968年开始将其列为该国今后经济发展的战略部门和最核心的产业。其总的发展特征是，信息产业的总额绝对量和它在整个国民生产中的比重都会显著上升,社会对信息产业的依赖会更大;新技术是信息产业的催化剂,在信息产业的增长总额中,与其中的传统部分(教育、出版、印刷、新闻等)相比，以新技术为基础的新型信息服务业将发展更快。
