硫酸厂从含二氧化硫的气体或从能够产生二氧化硫气体的含硫原料生产硫酸的化工厂。硫酸厂的产品主要是工业浓硫酸，有的还生产蓄电池硫酸、试剂硫酸、发烟硫酸、液体三氧化硫和液体二氧化硫等产品。硫酸厂的特点是：①硫酸是大宗生产、而又价格低廉的化工产品，但又是一种强腐蚀性的危险品，需妥善贮运。故运价较高，不宜作长距离运输。一般情况，硫酸厂接近消费地比接近原料产地更为有利。但有例外，如用冶炼厂冶炼烟气为原料就地生产副产硫酸。②大部分硫酸厂是与硫酸的消费者或与原料气的提供者组成联合企业。例如作为磷肥、染料、炼油、有色金属冶炼等联合企业的一个组成部分，在这些企业中，硫酸大多作为中间产品或副产品。③生产每吨硫酸，回收余热可发生蒸汽1.1～1.3t,凝汽发电可产生830～980MJ电力，除满足硫酸厂本身生产用电外，还可输出电能。④设备多与腐蚀性介质接触，寿命较短，折旧率较高。⑤废气、废水、废渣排放量大，对环境污染严重。但采用先进工艺，可减少排放。例如：用酸洗净化流程代替污水排放量大的水洗净化流程；用两次转化流程代替二氧化硫转化率较低的一次转化流程。同时，还要加强综合利用，如妥善利用硫铁矿渣等。（见彩图） 目前世界各国硫酸厂均以接触法为主，还有很少量的塔式法。硫酸厂生产规模大小不一，大厂年产量超过600kt，小厂仅10～40kt。1985年中国有400多个生产硫酸的工厂,其中年生产能力在80kt以上的有30个，以南京化学工业公司硫酸生产能力最大，年生产能力达 550kt，采用硫铁矿为原料。江西铜业分司贵溪冶炼厂采用炼铜烟气制酸，单系列年生产能力达360kt,这是国内单系列生产规模最大的硫酸生产装置。（见硫酸工业）
