云南省旅游学校是由创建于1956年原直属于国土资源部的昆明地质学校改建而成，现直属于云南省旅游局。1994年被国家教育部评估审定为国家级重点中等专业学校。2000年国家教育部再次认定学校为国家级重点中专，同时被国家教育部确定为全国重点建设的职业教育师资培训基地，2001年又被云南省教育厅确定为云南省重点建设职教师资培训基地。又再次被认定为国家级重点中专。经过48年的办学历程，目前已发展成为以旅游类、工科类为主，文、理、经贸、艺术、体育等专业兼有的综合性中等专业学校，是全国唯一的国家级重点旅游学校，也是全国一流的工科学校。是省级文明单位，云南省德育先进学校。学校坐落于昆明市北区龙泉路，占地216亩，建筑面积有10万余平方米。校内绿树成荫，花草覆地，环境优雅，四季常青。目前在校学生有4000余人。学校的教学与生活设施齐备，教学楼、实验楼、体育场馆、学生宿舍、学生食堂等一应俱全。价值3000余万元的实验仪器和实验设备，保证了各类课程的实验开出率达100%。语音室、计算机中心、多媒体教室、与因特网相连的千兆校园网、形体训练房、模拟导游厅、模拟酒吧、模拟中西餐厅、珠宝鉴定和加工实验室、实习宾馆等现代化教学设施。原有的工科类实习工厂、实习基地更进一步完善，并强化了现代化教学手段。新建的图书馆面积达5804平方米，藏书21万余册，馆内有电子阅览室、图书馆自动化系统等先进设施。学校的旅游博物馆被云南省人民政府确定为省级科普基地，藏有恐龙化石、陨石等珍贵实物资料5000多件，是全国院校百强博物馆之一。学校师资力量雄厚，有副教授1人、高级讲师49人、讲师120人、高级工程师5人、外籍教师若干人，并聘有全国颇具知名度的客座教授40余人。教师队伍中人才济济，有全省旅游类专业中、高等职业教学的学术带头人（全省旅游类专业中等职业教学用的20多门教科书及部分高职教科书由我校组织编写，且绝大多数教材的主编、副主编由我校教师担任），还有云南省中专教育的各类学科的带头人9人。
