合成（Compounding）就是由两个或两个以上的词合成一个词。以birth为例，birth可以分别与place,day, rate合成birthplace诞生地，birthday生日，birthrate出生率。
2. 各类合成词
不同词类可以合成名词、形容词、副词或代词。例如：
