这是美国民歌史上最重要的作品之一，原作者是被公认为民歌一代宗师的 Bob Dylan，不过第一个把它唱红的却是 Peter, Paul & Mary叁重唱，并且在 1963年夺得全美排行的亚军。
不过，尽管 Bob Dylan的创作内函受到了肯定，他的歌喉却实在不讨喜，因此他早期的好些作品都是藉由其他艺人的歌声才成名的，其中又以 Peter, Paul & Mary功劳最大，连续唱红了好几首他的作品。这支叁重唱也是美国民歌史上最重要的团体之一，除了完美的和声之外，叁位团员积极参与各种抗议的群众运动，数十年如一日，坚持的信念跟态度跟他们的歌声一样出名。他们成立於 1961年，「Blowing in the Wind」也是他们藉以成名的最重要作品之一。

第二次世界大战，使得所有参战国都元气大伤，美国也不例外。战后的新生代由于不愿重蹈父兄的覆辙，建立起了新的价值观，对于上一代所喜爱的一切，几乎全盘予以否定，甚至开创了全新的摇滚文化。1957年，越战爆发，美国介入了这场战争，投入大量人力、物力，还派遣子弟兵远渡重洋，前往越南战场，造成了惨重的伤亡，因此美国社会掀起了一股反战的热潮。在这同时，民歌也开始在全美各地校园流行起来，许多知识青年不仅利用他们所创作的民歌发表抗议的声音，更积极的加入示威的群众运动。
Bob Dylan在传奇性的民歌宗师 Woody Guthrie启迪下进入民歌界，很快的以独特的风格在格林威治村以及各大校园受到注意。1962年四月，他以深具内涵的创作技巧谱出「Blowing in the Wind」的时候，才是个二十刚出头的小伙子。这是他最早的「抗议歌曲」，对人们传统观念中「男子汉」的定义提出了质疑，希望世人能以和平而理性的态度来解决争端，不要再对世间的不幸视而不见、听而不闻，更不要再让无辜的人们继续丧生在战火之中。
