情报事业以推动、促进情报传播和提高情报利用能力为宗旨的社会性活动。在后工业化社会中，情报事业成为经济、社会发展的重要支柱之一。第二次世界大战后，科技情报事业成为情报事业中最有代表性的部分，它是在科学技术知识激增的环境下，从军事情报和文献工作中延伸并大规模发展起来的。世界一些主要国家在20世纪40～50年代前后纷纷创建了专职的科技情报机构(法国,1939;美国,1945；苏联, 1952；中国,1956；日本，1957)。为促进世界科技情报事业的发展，联合国教科文组织发挥了重要的作用。如建立世界科学情报系统(UNISIST),成立为第三世界国家情报事业服务的综合情报计划处(Unesco/PGI)，开展国际情报文献标准化工作等等。情报事业的主要内容有：①建立国家或公共情报系统，它是由不同范围和层次的子系统、各种类型和功能的情报机构按一定方式和结构所组成的，以计算机--远程通讯网为技术手段。②制订情报事业和情报管理的国家政策。③开展情报教育，培养各类型各层次情报专业人员和情报科学研究人员。④实施克服情报障碍，提高情报传播质量和效果的行政措施和技术手段 (如推行情报工作标准化，联机情报检索等等)。 ⑤促进国际情报协调和合作，谋求情报资源共享，促进情报科学研究的发展。对一个国家来说，情报事业的核心是健全国家情报基础结构，强化搜集、传播和利用情报的能力。情报事业与情报技术有密切的关系，情报技术的每一项重大突破，都极大地推动情报事业的前进。情报事业也为情报科学的发展创造了条件；情报专业学会的建立和学术活动的展开，历来被视为情报事业的一个组成部分。情报科学的研究，则为情报事业提供理论和方法。展望情报事业的未来发展，下列趋势是值得重视的：①情报事业的国际性日益突出，任何国家都不能仅利用自己生产的知识和情报，都不能孤立地发展自己的情报系统，因此，发展国家的情报事业以及加强国际间的合作和协调显得越来越重要。②情报产业作为情报事业发展的产物，在一些国家已达到相当的规模，情报产业的出现改变了传统的经济结构，并对社会和文化带来深刻的影响。情报产业的大规模发展已成为一种必然。③情报技术更新加快，并越来越明显地改变了情报服务方式，情报系统结构和情报传播利用的效果，成为情报事业发展中的一个关键变量。
